Soccer drills library for grassroots coaches

Free, coachable drills you can run tonight — organised by dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, first touch and fitness. Every drill lists the setup, the coaching points that matter and a progression for when it gets easy.

Dribbling drills

Dribbling improves fastest with high touch counts and decisions under light pressure. Keep grids tight, rotate players often and let them fail at speed rather than walk through cones.

Four-Gate Dribble

U8–U12 · 8–16 players · 10 min

20x20m grid with four 2m gates spread randomly inside. Every player has a ball.

Coaching points

  • Small touches with the laces when travelling, sole to change direction.
  • Head up between touches to spot the next free gate.
  • Accelerate out of the gate, don't slow down inside it.

Progression

Add two defenders without balls, then score a point only for dribbling through a gate a defender is guarding.

1v1 Shadow Line

U10–U16 · 8–20 players · 12 min

Channels 8m wide, 15m long. Attacker starts with the ball, defender starts one metre behind the attacker's shoulder.

Coaching points

  • Attack the defender's front foot before changing direction.
  • Use one clear feint, then commit — hesitation loses the yard.
  • Protect the ball with the far foot when contact comes.

Progression

Shorten the channel to 10m so the attacker must beat the defender in fewer touches.

Traffic Jam

U6–U10 · 10–20 players · 8 min

Shrink the grid every 90 seconds. All players dribble simultaneously in the same space.

Coaching points

  • Keep the ball inside the frame of your body.
  • Scan before every touch, not after a collision.
  • Change speed as a way to find space, not just direction.

Progression

Call out a turn (Cruyff, drag-back, outside hook) that players must execute on the whistle.

Passing drills

Good passing sessions train the receiving half of the pass as much as the strike. Demand an open body shape and a first touch that solves the next problem.

Y-Shape Combination

U11–U18 · 6–18 players · 12 min

A base player, two wide receivers and a forward station arranged in a Y across 25m.

Coaching points

  • Pass with pace into the receiver's back foot.
  • Receive side-on so both wide options stay in view.
  • Follow your pass — the pattern dies if players admire it.

Progression

Add a passive defender at the base, then make them live so players must read which side to play.

Rondo 5v2

U10–Senior · 7–9 players · 12 min

12x12m square, five players on the outside, two defenders inside.

Coaching points

  • Move the ball before the defender arrives, not once he does.
  • Split the two defenders whenever the passing lane opens.
  • Outside players adjust angle constantly — never stand still.

Progression

Limit to one touch, then award a bonus point for every pass played through the middle.

Third-Man Runs

U13–Senior · 9–16 players · 15 min

Three stations across 30m: a builder, a target who plays back, and a runner arriving late.

Coaching points

  • The target's job is to attract pressure, then set.
  • The third player times his run as the set is played, not before.
  • Play forward first, sideways only when forward is closed.

Progression

Play into a 4v4 game where only a third-man goal counts double.

Shooting and finishing drills

Finishing sessions should look like the goals your team actually scores: quick, from close range, off a first touch or a cutback rather than from 30 yards.

Cutback Finishing

U11–Senior · 8–18 players · 15 min

Full goal with a keeper, a wide server on each side, two lines of runners at the top of the box.

Coaching points

  • Cutback behind the penalty spot, away from the keeper.
  • Runners split: one near post, one at the penalty spot.
  • Finish with the side foot, prioritise accuracy over power.

Progression

Add a recovering defender so the striker must adjust his run and body shape.

Turn and Shoot

U10–U18 · 6–16 players · 12 min

Server 20m from goal, striker on the edge of the box, keeper in goal.

Coaching points

  • Check away before checking to the ball.
  • First touch out of the feet and across the body.
  • Get the shot away within two touches of turning.

Progression

Add a defender starting touch-tight to force a genuine turn or a set to a supporting runner.

Two-Goal Transition Finishing

U12–Senior · 10–16 players · 15 min

Two goals 40m apart with keepers. Teams attack immediately after a shot or turnover.

Coaching points

  • Shoot early — the extra pass is usually the wrong one in transition.
  • Support runners stay wide until the shot line closes.
  • React to rebounds; keepers rarely hold shots at speed.

Progression

Cap each attack at eight seconds to raise the tempo and force decisions.

Defending drills

Defending is a habit, not a moment. Coach the approach, the angle and the patience before the tackle, and reward regains rather than slide tackles.

Press and Show

U10–Senior · 8–16 players · 12 min

10x15m channel with two small target gates behind the defender, one on each side.

Coaching points

  • Close the first five metres fast, the last two slow.
  • Side-on stance, force the attacker onto his weak foot.
  • Tackle when the attacker's touch is heavy, not before.

Progression

Remove one gate so the defender must protect a single, specific side.

Cover and Balance 2v2

U12–Senior · 8–16 players · 15 min

20x25m area, one full goal with a keeper, two attackers versus two defenders.

Coaching points

  • First defender presses, second defender drops and tucks in.
  • Talk constantly: 'press', 'hold', 'I've got cover'.
  • Shuffle across together — never both dive in.

Progression

Add a wide neutral to overload the attack and stretch the defensive pair.

Six-Second Counter Press

U13–Senior · 10–18 players · 12 min

30x30m area, 6v6 possession with four counter-press seconds counted aloud.

Coaching points

  • Nearest player presses the ball instantly, others cut passing lanes.
  • Squeeze the space behind the press — don't leave a gap in midfield.
  • If the six seconds pass, drop into shape together.

Progression

Award two points for a regain inside six seconds and one for a normal turnover.

First touch and receiving drills

A clean first touch buys a second of time, and a second is the whole game at youth level. Train it with an unpredictable service, not a perfect one.

Wall Touch Circuit

U9–U16 · 4–14 players · 10 min

Each player 5m from a rebounder or partner, working for 45 seconds per set.

Coaching points

  • Decide the direction of the touch before the ball arrives.
  • Cushion with a relaxed ankle, don't stab at it.
  • Alternate feet every repetition.

Progression

Add a call-out ('left', 'right', 'turn') as the ball travels to remove pre-planning.

Pressure Receive

U11–Senior · 6–16 players · 12 min

15x15m grid, a server, a receiver, a defender starting two metres behind the receiver.

Coaching points

  • Feel where the defender is with your arm and shoulder.
  • Touch away from contact, then face forward.
  • If you cannot turn, set it back first time.

Progression

Let the defender start touch-tight and allow the receiver only two touches.

Fitness and warm-up drills

Grassroots teams rarely need running for running's sake. Build conditioning into ball work so the intensity is high without wasting a short midweek session.

Ball-Based Activation

All ages · Any players · 10 min

20x20m grid, every player with a ball, coach leading movement calls.

Coaching points

  • Build from walking to jogging to sharp changes of pace.
  • Include ankle, hip and hamstring mobility between dribbling blocks.
  • Finish with three short accelerations before the main session.

Progression

Add a reaction element: on the coach's call, sprint to the nearest line and back.

Shuttle Possession

U13–Senior · 10–18 players · 14 min

Two 20x20m grids 15m apart. Teams sprint between grids each time possession is won.

Coaching points

  • Sprint the transfer, jog nothing.
  • Keep passing quality high when the legs are heavy.
  • Rest for 60 seconds between blocks, four blocks total.

Progression

Increase the distance between grids or shorten the rest to 40 seconds.
